I've gotten pretty good at making difficult days look easy.
I smile. I joke around. I work. I spend time with my family. I make plans for the future. I talk about optimism and finding the good in difficult circumstances.
And I mean every bit of it.
This isn't some motivational exercise or a philosophy I came up with to sound inspiring. This is my actual life. Every single day.
What people don't always see is how much effort goes into managing those moments.
Some days are incredibly difficult physically. Much more than I generally let on. There are times when getting my body to cooperate with something most people wouldn't think twice about takes an enormous amount of effort.
I've developed ways to manage those moments. Mindset. Mental exercises. Redirecting my attention. Sometimes simply acknowledging how bad something feels, giving myself a little time, and then moving on to something else.
That doesn't mean the symptoms disappear. They're still there. Sometimes they're overwhelming.
I just don't feel the need to pull out the microphone every time they show up.
Besides, when most people ask, "How are you doing?" they're usually making conversation. They're being polite. They're not necessarily looking for a detailed account of everything going on in your life.
And that's just fine.
Part of it is also for the people around me. If I described every difficult moment, every symptom, every frustration, I'd be asking the people I love to experience a lot of those moments with me.
I'm not sure that would help them. Or me.
At least right now, I've found a way of managing that works for me.
There are times when I need help, and I'm learning to ask for it. There may come a day when I need much more.
But I also want to laugh with my kids. Have a conversation that has absolutely nothing to do with my health. Make plans. Build something new. Enjoy an ordinary afternoon.
And I can do those things even on days when my body isn't cooperating.
The person who seems happy might be working incredibly hard to stay that way. The person who always encourages everyone else might be facing something they rarely talk about.
I've learned that you can be genuinely happy and still be struggling. You can enjoy your life while wishing parts of it were very different.
The good thing is, I can have a really difficult day and still have a good day.
And I think that's worth remembering.
